It’s never really appropriate to wear faux fur coats in LA, but I swear it was cold the day I wore this outfit. Plus I’m low-key obsessed with this Spirit Hoods jacket because it’s one faux (obvi) and two, Spirit Hoods helps save animals with every purchase, which I am 100% for that.
If you know me you know that I am constantly decorating my home. Whether it’s moving rugs around from one room to another (George is going to kill me one day), or moving accents pieces around.
Warning: Major photo overload. You have been warned.
I decided to share bits and pieces of my living room to my dining table area… that we have yet to properly have dinner on BTW (shrugging my shoulders). It’s still a work in progress – I say this only because I’m probably going to rearrange things again tomorrow. I’m just never satisfied, lol.
By the way, how cute is my cactus candle?! I’m currently obsessed with it.
Hope you enjoyed my little-long tour of my home. I’ve listed all items below to shop and check out.
For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you know that I have been receiving acne laser treatments from AE Skin. I’ve never had issues with acne before until recently. I noticed my skin was changing and I was getting ‘adult acne’. Dr Alex, suggested the acne facial treatment, which is suppose to help prevent my skin from breaking out, and improve the smoothness and texture of my skin.
I will keep you all updated, and share my experience after my last treatment. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below or direct message me on Instagram. I’d love to answer any questions you may have.
I cannot believe my blog is turning 7 this year (insert clapping hands emoji here).
I decided to share how I started MelRodStyle in today’s post, plus share a few blog tips.
HOW I STARTED MY BLOG:
I always knew I wanted to do something with fashion. I went to FIDM and worked in the fashion industry. I remember working in a showroom, and how much clothing I would be gifted. I seriously played dress-up all day and put looks together. Ugh, I loved it, but there was no way of me showing these outfits, other than to George or Boo Boo Kitty (true story). There had to be some way I could share my outfits with my friends – I thought. Mind you, social media didn’t really exist.
Then one day, I was sitting in my car looking over a FIDM newsletter I received in the mail, and came across a blogger. It immediately caught my attention, and went online to find out more about this whole blogger thing. That’s when I stumbled upon a few other bloggers, like Cupcakes and Cashmere, Fashion Toast, Sincerely Jules, The Blonde Salad. I knew right then and there that this was it. This was the platform I needed to be on. I could share my outfits. It was perfect. I was so excited, you have no idea!
And just like that, on June 15, 2010, my blog was born. Not a clue in the world as to what I was doing. I was just going with it. My blog was mainly focused on OOTDs and DIYs. Also, my blog was once called Modanista Junkie. Moda is Fashion in Spanish. I thought I was being clever by making up a word (sigh… don’t ask). That quickly changed. Thought MelRodStyle was more fitting, since everyone called me Mel or MelRod anyway.
How to start a blog? Just start.
If you’re new to this blogging world, then guess what, you’re already ahead of the game because any fashion/beauty blogger that began their blog around or before 2007-2010 will agree with me that they had no clue what they were doing and didn’t realize that blogging would be what it is today. All you newbies out there get to see all our trials and errors.
Don’t try to perfect every little detail on your website. Just buy the domain, and start creating amazing content. Make sure you have good quality images though. It’s all about the lens.
Advice to brands: Send straight-to-the-point emails. Make it short and sweet.
Make sure you know the blogger you are reaching out to. I cannot tell you how many emails I receive that read: “Dear Melanie, we’ve been huge fans of your blog for several years now”…. Well if that was the case, then you’d know my name is not Melanie. Also, don’t send out “Dear Blogger” emails (insert eye rolling emoji here).
I created my blog as a hobby. Never in a million years did I think it would be what it is today. I thought I would have my blog as a hobby and continue to work a 9-5 job until I was able to pursue my own business (shoe line and open my own store). Things are so different now. I get to be my own boss. I get to make what I thought was just a hobby a career. Is this real life?
There has been several times where Brands don’t feel that they should pay influencers. My favorite is when they reach out to me to offer content to share on my blog, and provide a list of requirements, and tell me they do not have a budget for this collaboration. Now what do I get out of this? Nothing. What do they get out of it? Free advertisement. Brand exposure.
I think it’s very important for companies to know that some of us bloggers make a living out of this. And although it’s nice to receive free gifts, gifts are not going to pay the bills, unfortunately. Bloggers provide a service just like any other company does, like a spa, a hair salon, the list goes on.
I work with many PR agencies that loan me styles to shoot, however; there is always a mutual agreement of some sort, plus I have amazing relationships with most of these companies.
Is it ok to promote brands for product in trade? Sure, why not. Is it rude to say no? Absolutely not. It is up to you how you wish to proceed with every partnership. Whether it’s kindly declining or agreeing to their terms. I do both gifting terms and paid, depending on the collaboration.
Insert laughing emoji here, here and HERE!!! What people do not understand is that blogging isn’t that simple. There’s a lot that goes into creating content. You don’t just grab a camera, point and shoot. You have to pay attention to your surroundings, your backgrounds, the lighting, the angles, and most importantly that your outfits are on point (or whatever you’re shooting is amazing). There is so much work that is put into creating content.
DO I LOVE BLOGGING?
OMG, yes! It’s so much fun. I love what I do. I love creating content, meeting new people, making new friends, and of course having your support.
You have no idea how blessed and thankful I am for having you all by my side on this crazy-fun journey of mine. Somebody pinch me.
I’ve partnered with World Market to share how I styled a boho shawl three ways.
With Spring around the corner, it’s time to think about transitioning your wardrobe. One of the best ways to prep for those unpredictable weather days is with a light shawl. Shawls are an easy way to create an effortless look.
For my first look, I wore my shawl over a basic tee and denim overalls. Topped the look off with a choker necklace, boho bags/totes and a low mule sandal.
I decided for today’s post, I would share 10 important things I have learned as a blogger.
Don’t Be Afraid to try something new. Just because the next influencer hasn’t done it or isn’t doing it, doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t. It’s ok to go out of your comfort zone.
Be Real with yourself and everyone else. In the beginning of my blogging days, I would wear anything and everything that was gifted to me. I’m sure most bloggers did the same. Now, of course I’ve grown and learned to stay true to myself and my style. But one thing I’ve always remained since day one, is be genuine with others. I’ve been to countless events where bloggers I’ve met so many times before, act as if they don’t know me or haven’t met before, OR act overly nice where it seems super fake, yet they don’t support you on social media. I like to keep it very cordial at times likes these and keep it moving.
Start Saying No and Stop Saying Sorry – I struggled with these two for the longest time. Some may say I was a ‘people pleaser’ in the beginning. Finally almost 2 years ago, I decided to make that my goal. I politely would decline opportunities and didn’t apologize for what I wasn’t really sorry for. “I’m sorry I can’t promote your brand for free and return loaned styles without a return label.” With such a busy schedule, I would do the most and try to attend every event possible, until it quickly creeped up on me and drained me. It’s exhausting. I’ve learned you have to pick and choose and prioritize. That’s key.
Know Your Worth because people will take advantage.
Collaborate instead of Competing with other influencers. Reach out to other bloggers in the community and collab. You’ll only be successful if you support one another rather than constantly trying to climb over everyone. There’s room for everyone, you just have to figure out your place. I honestly get so excited when my fellow blogger friends are doing amazing things. It’s so nice to see others happy. Supporting each other is so very important, especially in the world we live in today.
Don’t Feel Discouraged because one brand told you no. Keep it moving. On to the next. Trust me, the same companies who once told me no, have reached out to me months later to collaborate. Don’t let one little thing get in the way of you pursuing what you want to do. You’re going to get a lot of no’s before you get a lot of yes’s, and that’s ok.
Ignore The Negativity because it can consume you and make you feel some type of way. If you get mean comments or bullied, just delete and keep being your fabulous self.
Set Goals and give yourself a deadline to accomplish them. I like to set little goals weekly. I’ve realized that this works best for me.
Surround Yourself With Positive Vibes. Be around people who are just as passionate and driven as you are. Good things happen to those who stick together.
Most importantly Stay Consistent and Creative at all times.
I hope this helps any blogger who is feeling lost, confused, or any type of way. If you have any questions, feel free to DM on Instagram or leave a comment below.
My name is Melissa…. whaaaa?! but most call me Mel or Mel Rod. I also respond to Nina Boo Boo Kitty or Gigi Mel (my nieces and nephews call me that). While others, well, call me Melanie. Don’t know why but if I had to guess it would be because they assume Mel is short for Melanie. So, yeah basically I will answer to any of the above, except Melanie.
I have 4 dogs and 1 cat. I baby talk to them all the time. I bet my neighbors think I’m cray.
Arranging flowers are my jam. My first job ever was at a flower shop.
I started my blog in 2010, which was first called Modanista Junkie.
Biggest pet peeve? People sending me multiple text messages when it could be very well sent in a single text. It drives me nuts, especially when it’s literally just an “lol” or an emoji.
I have two younger sisters and one brother.
I am very sarcastic. Honestly, truly. But I’m also a very emotional and sensitive person (ask George).
I have my lash extension license.
I went to FIDM.
I’ve always wanted to design shoes and open up a boutique.
I have major OCD.
I don’t eat red meat.
I was a cheerleader in high school.
I almost died when I was a little girl. I was maybe 3 years old. My dad always likes to share this one with new friends.
Speaking of… I can’t handle death. I don’t understand it (never have & quite honestly don’t know if I ever will), and it’s very difficult for me to cope with. I don’t know how to explain it.
Cheese is life (insert drooling emoji here). I can eat a whole block of cheese. It’s terrible but oh so delicious.
I wore glasses in 5th grade then upgraded to contact lens, until I got lasik eye surgery years later. I once wore glasses and braces at the same time… I know, I know. Cute kid, right?! I was like super attractive and popular (in my most sarcastic voice).
I was born here in California but my family is from Mexico. Probably one of the most asked questions whenever I meet someone is “What’s your ethnicity?” “What are you?” or “What’s your nationality?” Most of the time people are shocked to find out where I’m from. I always get either Brazil, Thai, once got Russian (so strange), and often get that I look Asian.
I have an obsession with cleaning my ears, lol. OMG, it sounds so weird typing this. I’m so effing weird.
My spirit animal is Nicole Richie.
In case you missed it and wanted to know more about me…
